In the late 1990s, transport and logistics partner Gheys turned to SKP to upgrade their fall protection equipment. From their site in Beringen, they mainly focus on the storage and handling of plastic granules in warehouses and silos. Project manager and prevention advisor Jan Mertens was there from the start and knows exactly why the partnership is still going strong today.

"Upgrading fall protection step by step"

Family business Gheys is celebrating its 130th anniversary. Over the years, the transport and logistics specialist has grown into a company with three sites, more than 600 employees and around 300 trucks. SKP mainly became involved at their Beringen site.

"In 1998, we opened our logistics division in Beringen. That’s when SKP first came onto our radar. We weren’t happy with our previous supplier anymore, so we reached out
to SKP. Things moved quickly from there, and they became our new safety partner. At first, it was mainly for rigging equipment, but over the years it shifted more towards fall protection as our activities kept expanding."

"SKP first helped us gradually replace our existing equipment, where we felt the quality just wasn’t up to standard anymore. Our safety requirements are partly based on petrochemical standards, so the bar is set pretty high. You need a partner who can operate at that level."

"SKP doesn’t just take responsibility, they feel responsible"

"Direct communication is crucial for us"

"What really makes the difference for us is the direct communication between both companies. It almost feels like we’ve become good neighbours, not just geographically, but in the way we work together. SKP understands exactly how to translate our needs into solid solutions, whether standard or bespoke. Not every silo access point is easy to reach, but we just know it’ll be sorted thanks to their input."

"Since then, SKP hasn’t just supported us with purchasing fall protection equipment, but also with installation, repairs and inspections. We can also rely on their engineers whenever we need specific expertise or advice."

"We’re specialists in our field, and they are in theirs. So we need to be able to trust their expertise completely – and that’s been the case from the start. That’s not something you can take for granted when you rely on an external partner for the safety of your own people. But honestly, we’ve never had a reason to doubt it."
"It’s not easy to put your full trust in an external partner when it comes to the safety of your own people."

"As far as we’re concerned, this partnership is here to stay. The consistency and flexibility in their service and planning give us the confidence we need in our sector. It feels like SKP isn’t just partly responsible for our safety – they genuinely take that responsibility to heart. And that’s rare."
