Impact of elevated temperatures
It is important to note that Gunnebo Grade 100 chains are available in two versions: Grade 100 (400) and Grade 100 (200). As the designations indicate, only Grade 100 (400) chains may be used at temperatures above 200°C. Apart from the temperature range, there is no difference between the two versions. Our chain assemblies are supplied as standard in Grade 100 (200).
At temperatures between 200°C and 300°C, the working load limit of Grade 100 (400) lifting chains must be reduced by 10%. This means that within this temperature range, the maximum load the chains can safely carry is reduced by 10% compared to their nominal capacity.
At even higher temperatures, between 300°C and 400°C, the reduction in working load limits increases further to 25%. It is essential to take this reduced capacity into account when planning lifting operations in high-temperature environments.
Limits of use above 400°C
A critical threshold is reached when the ambient temperature exceeds 400°C. Under these conditions, the use of Grade 100 chains (200 & 400) and components made from this steel grade is strictly prohibited. Extreme heat can significantly weaken the material and reduce its strength, creating a serious hazard during lifting operations and compromising personnel safety.
Repeated testing at high temperatures
When Grade 100 lifting chains are used at temperatures above 200°C, it is essential to perform periodic testing in addition to the mandatory quarterly inspection to ensure the chains continue to comply with the required safety standards. High temperatures can cause material changes and degradation, which may affect the structural integrity of the chains.
Why the temperature range matters
Understanding the temperature range of Grade 100 lifting chains is essential for safe and efficient operation in different environments. While these chains offer improved performance, operators must remain aware of how temperature affects working load limits and overall safety. By staying within the recommended temperature range , companies and teams can ensure smooth operations and maintain safety for everyone involved.
